When I first went out walking in San Francisco I was stunned by the number of people busily using their cell phones. Brad, who lives in Boston, says this is not unique to San Francisco - it is endemic in Boston, too - but it was new to me. I hadn't gotten far when MY phone rang (it was in my pocket) and then I needed it to help me find my way around. Then some urgent texts arrived. Pretty soon I was just like everyone else. Walking around with the stupid cell phone in my hand!
